Eat to Live, or Live to Eat?

Living in South Africa, you cannot help being aware of the difference in eating habits amongst different cultures.  Neither can you help being aware of the difference between the "Haves" and the Have Nots".  This morning I visited one of my regular Blogs on Blogspot and came across a very interesting post.  The photos and information is from the book Hungry Planet: What the World Eats by Peter Menzel and Faith D'Aluisio.

I will let the photos speak for themselves.

USA - $341 per week for 4 people (processed)

Germany - $500 per week for 4 people (liquid)

Mexico - @189 per week for 5 people (Fresh and Coke'ish)

Chad - $1.23 per week for 6 people (???)
Makes you think, hey?

Wow, this is amazing. I'd have to believe the Chad people are the most healthy of all. Great post.

In principle, I'm for eating to live and not for living to eat.
According to the pictures displayed in your post , Mexico is on the right track. I don't see any fruit with the Chad people, and without fruit there's no food. Fruit are in my opinion, the best food.

I read recently that the poorer countries actually eat more healthy food than the wealthy countries, and your pictures bear that fact. I think folks in North American (the US and Canada) eat mostly processed food, which is not food at all. I try to eat only whole foods, and fresh. If it has chemicals I have never heard of, or can't pronounce, I don't eat it.

These eating habits actually made me wonder, once again, whether "progress" is alwys good. In my own country it has been found that the African people, a couple decades ago, hardly ever suffered from diseases such as Diabetes and heart problems. Since they have become more westernised and have adopted the eating habits of the West, the incidence of Diabetes has attained epidemic proportions and heart disease is rife amongst them.
