Ain't they beautiful... and so delicious!

A while ago I posted some photos of the bees pollenating the litches (lychees) on our tree. (http://justiandmyself.blogspot.com/2009/10/when-i-left-my-house-this-morning-on-my.html)  Now it is about three months later and they are ready to eat.  Delicious, and so pretty!

Litchees are not indigenous to South Africa.  It originally came from the southern provinces in China, but is now cultivated as far afield as The USA and South Africa.  It is very high in Vitamin C and carries more heart-healthy polyphenols than grapes.

Good to look at, delicious to eat and healthy on top of it!

I love lychees. Gosh, you're so lucky they grow there.

I am just catching up on my blogging, and I read your last post about the little girl in Peru. I had heard about that before, and it was indeed true. Omigoodnes, gracious!

I love your new avatar, by the way. :-)

Lychees are one of my favorite fruits. I love the liquor made from them as well. In London, my girlfriend and I had the most fabulous "rose petal martini" at a posh Indian restaurant made with rose vodka and lychee liquor. I have since duplicated it many times in my home.

The is a farm in Florida that grows several varieties of lychees that are so superior to the ones I've bought in the Asian markets that are imported from China. Of course, they are expensive and have to be air freighted to CA. It's a wonderful indulgence, though, just once a year.

And to think, only 26km from town, where we live, the lychees don't grow because of the cold winters we do have... Oh I am so jealous, because I LOVE Lychees....

Just maybe I ought to buy a yard in town just to grow lychees, pawpaws, mangoes and all wonderful kinds of fruit which won't grow on the flats.

The difference in climate "op die berg", in town and on the vlakte always amazes me. It is not only the temperatures that differ, it is also the humidity and even rainfall. If only I knew earlier, I could have left you some somewhere in town, but I am afraid by now they are all gone. We are a couple of houses who share this tree.

Thank you all for your comments. Lychees are quite sweet but they have a taste that I cannot describe as it does not taste like any other fruit that I know.
