Limpopo Easter Weekend

This is an aerial photo of Moria City. You might ask: "What city?" but twice a year it turns into a city with around 1,5 million inhabitants.

It is the spiritual home of the Zion Christian Church (ZCC), the largest of the African indigenous churches in Southern Africa. Engenas Lekganyane founded the church in 1924 after reportedly receiving a revelation from God in 1910.

When Engenas died in 1948, his youngest son Joseph succeeded him as leader of the church. Edward, the eldest son, and traditional successor according to the African tradition, then started his own branch of the church and named it the St Engenas Zion Christian Church. The emblem of the original ZCC is a star and the St Engenas ZCC has a dove for an emblem. They are commonly known as the Star ZCC and the Dove ZCC.

The original church was influenced by the doctrines of the Christian Catholic Church of John Alexander Dowie, based in Zion, Illinois, and the teachings of the Pentecostal missionary John G. Lake, who began work in Johannesburg in 1908. The membership of the Star ZCC stands at approximately 15 million and the Dove ZCC at approximately 5 million.
Twice a year, over the Easter Weekend and on the first weekend in September, those members who possibly can, undertake a pilgrimage to Moria City; a barren area about 40 kilometres East of Polokwane in Limpopo. There is a small settlement at the site, but basically no infrastructure exists. (I cannot understand why basic amenities has never been built... after all, the week after Moria weekend, one of the ABSA Bank branches in Polokwane is closed to the general public in order to count and deposit the collection money from the weekend. The money, as I have been told by many members, are collected in 44 gallon drums!)

However, this lack of amenities does not stop around 1,5 million pilgrims from congregating at Moria City over the Easter Weekend. They come from all nine provinces of South Africa but mostly from Gauteng, North West, Mphumalanga and Limpopo, the most northern provinces. Over the last few years, some infrastructure, like tents, portable toilets and food stalls run by the church, have been provided but it is not nearly adequate to cater for 1,5 million people. However, such is the zeal of these worshippers that minor issues like this do not stop them from attending the major religious and social event on their calendar. The African way of worship includes much dancing and singing and very little time is spent sleeping during this weekend.
The town where I live lies just off the N1 freeway; the major road to Moria City and is traditionally the last (and in many cases the only) pit-stop on the way to Moria. About 2 000 busses alone, will pass through this little town during Thursday night and Friday morning and again during Sunday night and Monday. This is not mentioning all the taxis (10- and 16-seater busses) and private vehicles. As you can imagine, this has an enormous impact on the town.

Now you will understand why Naboomspruit has the biggest Kentucky Fried Chicken outlet in the country and why it stays open 24 hours a day!

PS: Apologies for the poor quality of the photo's, but I had to use what I could get.

Very interesting! Is there prayer involved or just dancing and singing?

I drove past here on my way to the Kruger Park in October last year.

It was fairly desolate but I could see the expansive area off to the right and large pedestrian crossings on the road.

When I taught in Grahamstown, some of my students were Zionists and their descriptions of their gatherings were impressive.

Hi Arley, Yes they do have sermons, prayer, fath healing and also a lot of prophesy. Remember, this is a very Africanised church. They themselves admit that they are not always sure whether it is the Holy Spirit or the forefather spirits speaking through them! The African people just do not do things the way other people do.

Nice posting. Just a quick thing: "Edward, the eldest son, and traditional successor according to the African tradition, then started his own branch of the church and named it the St Engenas Zion Christian Church." This is inaccurate, Bishop Joseph Engenas Lekganyane is the one that added the name of the founder "St. Engenas" to the name ZCC to (among other reasons) establish distinction between the split churches. You are correct though in that Bishop Joseph was nominated by the founder to succeed him and it's the African Tradition that believes in the eldest son taking over that lead the confusion.

Hi Thato M, thanks for visiting and thanks for correcting my error. I would love to learn more about the ZCC and Moria City, so if you have more information, please pass it along, especially if it is first hand. I am very interested in African traditions and cultures but unfortunately find that when I start speaking about these things, my African friends seem to clam up. So I am open to education.

Thank you so much for these refreshing story; I grew up in the church; the last time I attended easter Moria was in 1991 when i was 16 but I still miss it. we do not sleep there; you just take a quick nap and that's it. i used to sleep on Tuesdays. you can imagine exhaustion; we dance; sing and pray 24/7. it is amazing; I always tell my children that I will take them there on easter one day.
you can join any group there they will never say we dont know you; who is this. you can meet any prophet (we call them mabone which means light; i dont know the reason maybe because they can see things that many cant see) while walking around and they tell you your stories.
thank you.

Thanks for visiting MM. I do hope you would make it back one day. Your children would miss out on not only a great religious experience but also a cultural one if they do not attend a Moria weekend. Yes, you will be made welcome by all. It is one of the African traits that I admire the most, their ability to socialise so easily and naturally. The Whites (definitely including myself) can really learn much from them in this regard.

Hi, I am a member the church is very African and it uses the language we as African understand. You are very right there is no fight amongst all 1.5-2m people attending the gathering the only language we use is peace be onto you , it doesn’t count what wrong you have done to me my respond will be peace onto you I wonder why we can’t use this as a example to our country

HI Anonymous, thank you for visiting and commenting on my blog. I can just imagine the exitement at this gathering, also the sense of absolutely well-being that so many like-minded people must create.

I agree with you when you wish that this can become an example to all the people in our country. Even in the apartheids years I have had black and coloured friends and I find that nowadays, I am becomming more and more able to communicate on an equal level with the young people of our country. This was very difficult before as there was alwys a measure of distrust on both sides which I believe was mostly because of cultural differences and ignorance. Where I work there are a number of young (between 18 and 24) black, coloured and white people undergoing training and it really makes my day when they come into my office and sit and chat to me about normal everyday affairs. They call me Magogo or Tannie and often come to me for advice and assistance, so yes, maybe the ghosts of the past are slowly being laid to rest... I for one certaintly hope so.

A human kind of human said...

Dear Abram, I am so sorry if you find my questions silly. I am truly interested to learn about all aspects of the lives of fellow South Africans specifically in order to understand and form a genuine respect for them. Unfortunately respect does not just drop out of the sky, it is something that is acquired with knowledge of the subject. If I do not aske, I will not learn and thus I will never be able to feel genuine respect for your church and other cultural entities.

I apologise if I offended you. This is meant to annoying people who always ask if we pray the real God or are we just dancing and singing. That is why it’s called a church. We have a lot of prayer, church sermons and protocols that we follow. In fact, our believe is that nothing is more powerful than a prayer. KGOTSONG

A human kind of human said...

Hi Abram, it is now clear to me that I misunderstood what you meant with "silly questions". It is a fact that many white South Africans do not know what the doctrine of the ZCC is and given our country's history with xenophobia, I believe it is very important for us to get to know more about one another so that mutual respect can grow between us. Luckily I work in an environment where we are encouraged to talk and discuss culture, traditions and such over the colour and ethnic lines. I have a passion for making our New South African democracy work and I would love to start conversations with people of other cultures and traditions in order to promote understanding and acceptance amongst us. So please, if you have questions for me about my culture and traditions, let me know. Kgotso e ebe le lena.

I love the church ZCC. I am one of the believers, this is the church I have really experienced God's miracles, seen it with my eyes. In the bible God says nothing is impossible that means nothing is impossible the statement is true. People get healed in mysterious things you have never seen in your life. You have to believe and you will realise the greatness of God

OUR CHURCH LEADERSHIP LOVES AND TREAT EVERYONE WITH RESPECT,BUT AM SORRY IF YOU ARE A CRIMINAL NO ROOM FOR YOU.THAT IS WHAT OUR SPIRITUAL LEADER HATES ALOT.ONE MORE THING MOST PEOPLE FAIL TO UNDERSTANT IS THE POSITION OF ZCC IN POLITICAL SPHERE.YES, POLITICAL LEADERS VISIT THE CHURCH EVERY CONFERENCE,BUT YOU MUST NOTE THAT THEY ARE THERE TO PRAY NOTHING MORE NOTHING LESS,THE CHURCH DOES NOT CONCERN ITSELF WITH A CERTAIN POLITICAL PARTY,OR TO SUPPORT ANY POLITICAL PARTY,AND IT DOES NOT ENCOURAGE ITS MEMBERS TO VOTE FOR CERTAIN PARTY,BUT TO GO AND VOTE THAT IS THAT AS TO WHICH PARTY THE CHURCH IS NOT INTERESTED.

Welcome MPHAHLELE THATO DAVID and mmtlou. Thank you for visiting my blog and leaving comments. One I experienced as friendly and informative and the other as rather hostile. I guess I will never understand why my interest in these churches seem to upset certain members of the ZCC churches. It saddens me when I experience aggresion from a brother or sister in Christ, no matter which denomination he or she is from. After all, we serve the same God and use the same Bible as our guide. (Was the last scripture on your list a hint MTD? - smile)

I write this believing that it will give you the final resolution. The people who can give you the best information about the church are the bishops of the two churches, first hand information. From my personal opinion it is the first born church of God layed upon the rock of ages and not the mountain of trembling as anticipated with Moses in Sinai. This is the center of all celestial laws that shall be given to all humanity. This is the mountain spoken of in the book of Hebrews 12:1 To the end, I hope this will be your first wake to stay focused and watch. It is not easy to convince anyone as this is the predestinated word. The word must have life which is the spirit of God to live and makes one to understand the scriptures. The prophet Isaiah asked,"who has beleived our report and to whom is the arm of the lord revealed". I say the nations are so desparate in seeking the truth of God but the word is covered with gross darkness and the vail of covering as stated by the Prophet Isaiah. My understanding of the scripture is that the lord himself shall remove in zion the vail that covereth the nations. The name Zion shall never cofuse you anymore, I clearly understand that we have authentic Zions in the face of the earth, one in Jerusalem, another one in Michigan USA. and another one in South Africa, I already know what your next question is. The answer to that shall be given to you if the Lord allows me to do so. Please pray harder and ask God to give you wisdom to fear Him and understand all things. It is good before God that you desire to know, that shows the seed that has life. Thank you

I have seen God's miracles its not a joke. There is no whitchcrat done by the church. After the latest comment I re-read my original post to see what in it could possibly give offence to worshippers of ZCC. I could find nothing. To those who get upset with the post, please remember that people from accross the globe reads my blog and I try to give them a basic but positive picture of my country and its life style. In future no offensive comments will be published. I never meant to harm or upset anybody and I still believe that my post is an honest portrayal of this church with nothing to give offence. Please if you have something positive to add, by all means, comment. However, if you have negative critique or feelings, keep it to yourself. I remain respectful to the church and members of it, so I expect the same from them. God bless.

Hi there everyone. I am a member of the ZCC, actually I was born into ZCC parentage and was baptised when I came of age. it appears the church is an enigma to a lot of people. But to me as a member, the whole story derives from the work of the holy spirit. When I studied theology part time for my own spiritual enrichment, I became even more compellingly clear that the ZCC operates under divine guidance. The Bishop is led by the Holy Spirit in the leadership of the Church, and Zionists are also obliged by the Holy Spirit to live their lives on earth in the way that pleases and glorifies God as a precursor to inheriting the Kingdom of God. The ZCC has beautifully blended African culture with the Gospel of Christ, and this partly explains the stability in ZCC member families, their inner peace and strong work ethic for productive/fruitful and healthy lives. The bishops of the ZCC and St. Engenas ZCC have been divinely appointed to lead their people to eternal life under the auspices of the Lord Jesus Christ. Kgotsong, Peace be unto you!

First of all i would like to start by saying Peace be unto u. I am a member of the Zoin Christian Church, i grew up in this church and i know its greatness. Zcc needs people who are patient in God and those who believe in him. Bt my comment is on the quarrel of the two churches, mainly zcc and st Angenus zcc, people this is one church and we should act as one, no church is better than the other because we serve ONE living God, and yes we knw that ke kereke ya sephiri. It humbles me to knw that there are people interestd in our church, bt the best experience is if u are there urself. Dont chase peopld away by being all arrogant, our church welcomes everybody rich or poor. Practice the respect u are taught by the elders everywhere u go. Peace be unto u.

Peace unto to you all, I recently attended the Easter Conference at Zion City Moria and the total number of people that gathered there was 9 431 001 and Bishop BE Lekganyane delivered a hard hitting sermon. To quote him Let as read from the book of Mathew chapter 27 verse 3-6 which reads thus: Then Judas , his betrayer seeing that He had been condemned was remorseful and brought back the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and elders saying: I have sinned by betraying innocent blood' and they said What is that to us? You see to it. Then He three down the pieces of silver in the temple and departed and went and hanged himself. But the chief priests took the silver pieces of and said, it is not lawful to put them into treasury because they are the price of blood. Just like the church elder referred above 'THE ZCC DOES NOT WANT DIRTY MONEY AS A DONATION. YOU ARE WARNED AS MEMBERS AND NON MEMBERS WHO AMASS WEALTH.'
Easter Monday is known as the day of resurrection of christ nd resurrection also mean renewal or rebirth. Have you changed your ways of life? Will the old person, the one full of gossip, hatred for other people be gone when you live Moria? Will the old person, the irresponsible parent be gone when you live Moria?
Peace!
Will a new mosione be born in your heart when you live Moria?.

But that "blood money" came from the treasury of the high-priests in the first place. They were the ones that put Jesus' blood on it. And now they want to play righteous and not accept/admit to the crime they committed? I find that rather hypocritical; but then again, maybe it was done to fulfill the prophecies. Funny how that was juxtaposed to the ZCC.

If o nyaka go ipshina ka bophelo please people just leave our church alone. Kereke ya Tshehla a se ya go raloka. All the information you have posted here the journalist are incorrect please respect other peoples privacy or otherwise you are going to regret what you deserve. Initially the only insignia was the green and black cloths (badge) for the church. The blue/silver dove and the silver star were only introduced after 1949 to signify the different churches. It is therefore wrong for you to say the star was the original sign or badge. The church is actually reintegrating to fulfill St Engenas' prophecy that his church is going to divide but will again reunite. We all wish it could happen in our lifetime that St Engenas ZCC will once again become it. St Engenas ZCC.

Kgotsong. People please let's not talk on behalf of the church , either be both churches let's not alter words, because the appointed people to speak for the church are found at church, so please I beg of you ka moya wa kgotso let's not. Because we will rise conflict of something we have heard and enjoy saying on the internet. So I beg let's stop all this. To the creator of this block I greet you with peace and humble myself upon you and gently ask you to not continue if you want information about these churches you must go to moria and ask permission also to post on the net because publicating something like these you need permission from the elders of the church. Thank you may the Lord bless you and be with you . I thank you :)

Kgotso! I was an American Peace Corps Volunteer teacher in Botswana, 1992-1995, and I travelled to Moria, South Africa, with some of the people of Seleka, Botswana, for the Easter Celebration of 1993. On Easter Sunday, I was baptised at Moria, and given a star to wear. I went because 'the people of the star' I'd met in Botswana were some of the kindest, humblest, and most honest folks I'd ever met.

I remember very well that week-end. It changed my life forever. I didn't understand much of what went on around me

I returned to visit Africa and my 'rebirth' place just before Christmas there at Zion City in 2004... and attended a church service in Khaleyetsa (spelling?) a big township near Capetown.
